I just fought some drones and found a "weathered object". I decided not to open it yet. Then I changed my mind, activated it from the storage panel, and opened it. It was empty, and yet somehow there was another unopened weathered metal capsule in my hold. I opened it, it was empty, and there was yet another unopened weathered metal capsule.

My current theory is that they're like tribbles - when you're not looking, they reproduce. That's why you find so many of them in space.

Here's my game log:

You have another look at the metal capsule stored away in your cargo hold. Admittedly, you are very curious about its contents. Do you open it after all?

You decide to open the capsule despite not knowing its contents. It turns out to be empty.

This is indeed a bug. The capsule is supposed to be marked as empty post-opening, but clearly it is not.

Though having one that spontaneously reproduces behind your back sounds like a fun idea. :)
