After a rather long mission on which I did some sketchy stuff (I turned in Alan Smithee after we robbed the Zangrolian cache) but also a lot of good stuff (lots of discoveries and positive alien relations) I flew back to the wormhole. HQ was very upset with me and refused to authorize any more fuel. So I ended the mission, and the final score breakdown showed -400 for "Lost Ship." What's that? I thought that "Lost Ship" meant that you let your ship get destroyed... but clearly I didn't, in this case, since I made it back to the wormhole). I did lose 1 crew member in an accident, but that's it.
"Lost ship" seems to just mean "quit without concluding the mission". Though yeah, there should be a sanity check - maybe you could get something like -50 for "Insubordination", if you quit without actually finishing the mission (that is, you just walk off instead of concluding the mission)
Tacroy, that doesn't seem to be correct. If I quit the game at any time (by going to the menu and choosing "quit game") there's no score penalty. And even if you fly to headquarters and click "conclude mission" without accomplishing anything, you don't get any score penalty.
Anyway, in this particular game I certainly didn't quit... I visited every planet, went back to headquarters, didn't have any more fuel, and clicked "conclude mission," then got the "Lost Ship" on my score.
Yeah, I've noticed this bug as well. For me it always seems to happen after I try to open the metal sphere and it explodes. I continue on with my mission, but when I get back to base I've got the same problem where command is REALLY pissed with me and refuses to give me any more fuel. Then at the score screen I see the -400 lost ship penalty.
Just curious Surelyyoujest, did your accident occur while trying to open that mysterious metal sphere?
Aha! Yes, I did encounter an exploding capsule on that mission. I think you've tracked down a bug!
The bug is indeed that the exploding capsule docks you 400 points. Before dev 9, it destroyed your entire ship, and I accidentally left in the score change for "Lost Ship" when I changed it to only kill someone.
This will be fixed in dev 10. For now, I can only advise you to be extra-careful when handling strange unmarked containers, and to consult your local archeologist if in doubt...
